The weekend starts with a bang as cosplayers,
fanatics and all around nerds come together to celebrate Comic Con. It provides
the idea of dressing up as your favourite fictional character, for example from
comics (in the name), movies, or A growing popularity in Japanese animation (or
anime). It also holds a huge variety of
other pop cultures and categories to sink your teeth into. I go there myself
yearly and I asked several fellow geeks their opinion on the mega festival.
Lauren (13) said it’s a place where people can be happy and celebrate their favourite
characters, as Ryan (13) says its “amazingly chaotic”. We also caught up with a
fanatic of the Japanese anime “Attack On Titan. Caitlin (13) says “So much
anime to explore!”. As its one of the biggest events for people who grew up
with their noses in a technicolour universe. But it was never ALWAYS so popular.
It all started with one named Shel Parf. He was a comics enthusiast and there
was a potential to the passion had for it. There the idea of Comic Con was produced.
It was mid 60s and he sparked the idea of throwing a one-day festival that he
named “triple fan fairs”. It then moved to San Diego and he named it the
“Golden State Minicon”. He held the first convention on the first of august to
the 3rd, 1970. From their it grew bigger and even hit a world record
for most attendees in 2009. It still tends to surprise with the unique and wide
ranged guests that appear yearly. On the subject of guests this year was
groovy. The theme seemed to be the 1970s with guests such as Starsky and Hutch,
Huggy Bear and even Flash Gordon. I felt like a giddy kid being in the same
room as them although the prices were quite astronomical for my liking. But I
still recommend Comic Con, from the phenomenal stalls to the stunning cosplay
it truly sums up the nerd culture in one convention.
