GCSE Drama With Armer

GCSE Drama With Armer
We got an exclusive interview with Ms Armer to discuss the new GCSE papers and her personal opinions of them.

Interviewer: BBC News Team, Deyes here with Ms Armer from the English department.

Ms Armer: Good Afternoon

Jack: So what do you think of the new GCSE’s with the 1 to 9 grading system because I know a lot of students have voiced their concerns and have discussed how confused they are.

Ms Armer: I think your point is fair, Jack. You’ve actually asked me two questions there. One, what I think of them and then hinted that students are slightly confused about them and I think that’s a definite possibility of any time anything is introduced that’s new, there is an element of confusion there. I think for a little while, they will be slightly confused as we get into the new scheme. I think eventually though, for people like yourselves in the higher sets, you will be very good with the new exams. It will allow you to flourish beautifully. Having looked at a lot of the syllabus now and looked at the sort of things you’re expected to do I actually quite like the new GCSE’s from the more able point of view. I do have a slight issue though with the students who do struggle more with their reading and writing. I think accessing some of the criteria that is expected from them will actually trouble them slightly. I think they will struggle with their expectations most definitely.

Jack: We know this was originally brought in by a certain Michael Gove

Ms Armer: Yes (laughs)

Jack: What are your opinions on him and how he’s done this?

Ms Armer: Okay, Mr Michael Gove then, our favourite character. After watching him in his role as education secretary I did seem to think that maybe he made many decisions and they seem to be without thought. They possibly weren’t without thought but they did seem to appear to have been made without much preparation and the ideas were implemented without saying, implemented very quickly, without time to prepare, without time to make it work properly, so I think he is someone who is very indecisive, very quick to think, definitely what I thought of him when he was in power at that particular time.

Jack: Everyone I’ve spoken to seems genuinely worried about this new GCSE because it’s such an important thing with it being harder for the students. Do you think it is harder overall?

Ms Armer: Having looked at it carefully now, I don’t think it’s actually harder as in the questions they ask you. Some of the texts you have to study may be harder in the fact that you haven’t got the opportunity to choose a slightly easier one or a slightly smaller version of one. The texts that you’re asked to study are definitely more difficult or rather the choice of having the more difficult or the slightly more accessible has been removed. I think the questions are very similar, some of them. I think they’ve introduced questions which haven’t been asked for a long time now so we’re slightly out of practise bringing them in from a younger age. One in particular is the language paper 1 question 1 and the structure question. That hasn’t been asked from candidates in many, many years now so it isn’t something that’s in our teaching anymore but obviously it has to be now so we’ve had to resurrect from many years ago. I think it’s accessible to again the more academic, more easily and the less academic less easily. So I do think it creates a bit of a divide, I have to say.

Jack: You used the word ‘resurrect’ so would that mean it’s not necessarily new questions, more bringing them back from past papers.

Ms Armer: I think that’s definitely what’s happened. I think it’s gone back to how it was when those of us who took ‘O levels’ all those years ago. What Michael Gove specifically said in a lot of his speeches was he wanted it to be more rigorous whereby there was less areas where people could still get a good grade for not doing something quite so strenuous. The indicator for that is some of the texts that he’s insisting that we study. There aren’t the slightly easier texts there so I think definitely; he wants it to go back to something that was more prevalent a few years ago.

Jack: Thanks for your time.

Ms Armer: It’s been a pleasure thank you very much.

School health: Jabs!

Today, the year 9 students of Deyes High School have been subjected to not one, but two jabs. They have received the pair of important inoculations, one for Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio and another for Men ACWY.
You may not like the sound of two Jabs in one day, but trust me, you won’t like the sound of catching one of these fatal diseases. Diphtheria is a potentially fatal extremely contagious infection that mainly affects the nose and throat, and sometimes the skin. Tetanus can be fatal if left untreated, but the tetanus vaccine and improvements in treatment mean deaths from tetanus are now very rare in the UK. Polio is a serious viral infection that used to be common in the UK and worldwide. It's rare nowadays because it can be prevented with vaccination.
As you can see, as long as you have these vaccinations you should be fine. They are worth it!

Many people had expressed concern as to why he was allowed to continue playing for Sunderland during the ongoing trial. The chief executive of the club has now resigned due to her wrongly made decision and lack of judgement by allowing him to play. Margaret Byrne would have sacked had she not quit, and the football club have since released a statement to the family of the victim. "Throughout this deeply regretful situation, we recognise that one devoted young fan and her family have been very badly let down, first and formost by Mr Johnson and his despicable actions but also by the club they support. International Women's Day!

International Women’s Day!

International Women’s Day took place on Tuesday 8th March. The International Women’s Day website has used the #PledgeForParity to campaign for ‘gender balanced leaderships’. Worldwide, women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievement. The website has proclaimed that ‘Each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to take pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity.’

Since launching this fortnight, over 70,000 people have pledged on the International Women’s Day website. You can share the #PledgeForParity with colleagues, friends and followers.

Celebrities such as Emma Watson, Victoria Beckham, Donatella Versace and Chris Hemsworth got involved on social media by posting supportive images or advice for women of our generation to aspire to.

Kim Kardashian-West posted a controversial nude selfie on Instagram but despite having over 1.5 million likes, many disagreed with this post’s morals.

Some believe that it was an act of feminism but others believe it was quite the opposite. Bette Midler and Chloe Grace Moretz voiced their opinions towards the image on twitter. Chloe posted ‘@KimKardashian I truly hope you realize  how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies.’

Bette Midler posted saying ‘Kim Kardashian posted a nude selfie today. If she wants us to see a part of her we’ve never seen, she’s gonna have to swallow the camera.’  Both of these messages sparked a response from the reality TV star as she defended her intentions.

However, celebrities such as Bella Thorne tweeted in support saying, ‘I think every woman should be allowed to make their OWN bodies….and it’s not our place to tell them what they can and can’t do with their body.’  The mother of two was also supported my model Emily Ratajkowski and young feminist celebrity of the year, Rowan Blanchard.
Actor Chris Hemsworth also posted on instagram saying '....Happy #internationalwomensday to my mum, daughter, wife and all the incredible women out there.'
Here in Maghull, we have inspiring women of our own. Amy, currently in sixth form, has played for England in Table Tennis. Recently, she gained a silver medal in the County Championships for Lancashire. Amy has being playing since she was just 8 years old and has competed in many competitions. On the subject of International Women's Day, we asked her about how other girls can be encouraged in sport. She said that "In  the Table Tennis competitions, there are the top thirty-two boys but only the top sixteen girls. I think this clearly shows that there is still some unfairness in sport but I think that there are plenty of female role models in sport that we should look up to and that can be really encouraging."

International Women's Day is a big step towards the equality of genders and many people support it. Please remember to post the #PledgeForParity and join the Campaign for women's rights today!

How many cases of ADHD are out there?

Research has shown that children diagnosed with ADHD may not all actually have the condition. Researcher Dr Mu-Hong Chen claims that the majority of diagnosed children are born in August, making them the youngest in their year. He says they are probably just under-developed and are receiving and taking medication when they don’t really need to.

In an interview with the head researcher, he said “Our findings emphasise the importance of considering the age of a child within a grade when diagnosing ADHD and prescribing medication to treat ADHD."
An interview with the local head of health was taken and when asked what she thought about this she, Mrs Rens, had this to say:

“To test if a child actually hasthe ADHD condition, you must give them medication and after a month see if it has worn off - or if they are the same.” This shows that although the study is true, it is possible to find out if they do have ADHD.

First look at the Aston Martin DB11

Aston Martin DB11
The new Aston Martin DB11 has recently came out. The next out should have been the DB10 but it was taken by Spectre, the latest James Bond film. Its best feature and new design is a turbo charged engine that will make it faster than any DB model before it, having a top speed of 200mph and an acceleration of 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds. Ian Minards, the Product Development Director at Aston Martin, said “Refining the DB9’s already impressive attributes into what we have today in the DB9 GT has been a careful and delicate process.” It is clear that he is very passionate about this car, and so are many fans.
